About the CHINOOK 34
Based on the Vigilant Class, designed by Geiger for wood construction. With some justification, the CHINOOK 34 holds the claim as being the first fiberglass production sailboat of this size to be built in the US. The builder, Marine Costructors Inc. was founded by a group of indiduals who wished to build boats for themselves at a reasonable cost. The company, expanded to build other models as Cascade Yachts and still remained in business into the 21st century. Details with rig, interior, etc., vary considerably.
Designed by Frederick Geiger and built by Yacht Constructors, Inc (USA), the Chinook 34 is a classic American cruiser with a production run of 70 hulls between 1956 and 1968. Its substantial 12000.0 lb displacement and 37.77 comfort ratio reflect a design prioritizing stability and seakeeping over high-speed planing.
- Best for:
- This vessel suits coastal cruisers and offshore adventurers who value a heavy, stable platform with a 6.5 ft max draft, making it well-suited for those seeking a traditional, robust sailing experience rather than high-performance racing.
- Bluewater capability:
- With a low capsize ratio of 1.58 and a high displacement-to-length ratio of 440.3, the Chinook 34 is inherently stable and well-suited for offshore passages, provided the structural integrity of the keel is verified.
- Comparables:
- Comparable to other 1950s-60s American heavy displacement cruisers like the Tartan 34 or O'Day 36, the Chinook 34 shares similar full keel characteristics and moderate sail area-to-displacement ratios (16.24), appealing to owners seeking proven, conservative designs.
