About the CHALLENGER 15 (FORD)

First built by Sail-Mor Boat Co. of Royal Oak MI. (USA). The rights were sold to Leon F. Irish Co. of Walled Lake, MI (USA) some time in the early 1960's. Spin area: 130 sq ft Thanks to George Eheman, who commissioned the design and was the original builder of the CHALLENGER 15.

Sailpages Buyer's Take

Designed by F. S. Ford and built by Leon F. Irish Co. (USA), the Challenger 15 is a compact fractional sloop produced from 1960–1982. With a displacement of 385.0 lb and a LOA of 15.0 ft, it represents a lightweight, trailerable design with a build count that remains unquantified in available records.

Best for:
This boat is best suited for coastal day sailing, trailerable cruising, and novice sailors seeking a manageable, low-maintenance vessel. Its light displacement and fractional rig make it responsive for single-handers or couples looking for easy transport and storage.
Bluewater capability:
With a displacement of 385.0 lb and a comfort ratio of 4.29, this boat is not designed for offshore or bluewater passage making. Its light weight and short waterline length limit its seakeeping ability to protected coastal waters and sheltered bays.
Comparables:
Comparable boats include the O'Day 15 and the Pearson 15, which share similar dimensions and trailerable roles from the same era. These vessels offer similar fractional sloop rigs and lightweight construction, targeting the same market of casual coastal sailors.
