Designed by Frank Butler and built by Catalina Yachts (USA) from 1976–1991, the Catalina 25 is a high-volume production vessel with 6031 hulls built. Its enduring popularity is reflected in the extensive aftermarket support for upgrades, particularly in sails and canvas, though owners must navigate significant structural maintenance challenges.
- Best for:
- This boat suits coastal cruisers and weekend sailors who prioritize a proven, affordable entry into sailing and are willing to perform diligent maintenance on known weak points. It is less suited for those seeking a turnkey bluewater cruiser due to the prevalence of deck and keel issues.
- Bluewater capability:
- With a displacement of 4550.0 lb and a capsize ratio of 1.93, the boat offers moderate stability for coastal passages, but widespread reports of keel sump cracking and deck core moisture significantly compromise its structural integrity for extended offshore use.
- Comparables:
- Comparable boats from the same era include the O'Day 25 and Pearson 24, which share similar displacement and beam dimensions for coastal cruising. The Catalina 25 distinguishes itself with a higher build count and a more modern masthead sloop rig compared to many fractional-rigged contemporaries.
