About the CATALAC 9M

Also called CATALAC 30. The first and most popular of all the Catalac models with more than 250 built. A shortened version became the CATALAC 8M which sold nearly as well. In 1994, a new version was introduced from a different builder using the the original 9M molds. This was the CATALAC 900. (about 20 built)

Sailpages Buyer's Take

Designed by Winterbotom/Lack/Duff and built by Tom Lack Catamarans (UK), the Catalac 9M is a compact catamaran with a production run of 250 hulls starting in 1975. This model is characterized by its lightweight displacement of 8000.0 lb and a beam of 13.75 ft, offering a balance of performance and coastal cruising comfort.

Best for:
This boat is ideally suited for coastal cruisers and weekend sailors who prioritize shallow draft access and ease of handling over heavy offshore endurance. Its light displacement and manageable size make it accessible for smaller crews or single-handers seeking a responsive, trailerable catamaran.
Bluewater capability:
With a low displacement of 8000.0 lb and a comfort ratio of 14.0, the Catalac 9M is primarily designed for coastal and protected waters rather than extended bluewater passages. While its capsize ratio of 2.75 indicates reasonable stability, its light construction and short production run suggest it is best kept within sight of land.
Comparables:
Comparable vessels include other late-1970s production catamarans like the Lagoon 28 or Beneteau First 26, which share similar dimensions and target the same market of entry-level multihull enthusiasts. These boats are comparable due to their similar beam-to-length ratios and focus on recreational coastal sailing rather than bluewater expedition cruising.
