About the CARLSON 30

6 were exported to the US and 4 remained in Spain. Strip plank 25mm (1") Mahogany from Guinea. Top-nailed half-moon interlocking planks. Keel-stepped mast of Norwegian pine. Fiberglass versions were built in Canada first as NORTH COAST 30, then as the WINDWARD 30. (Designer Dick Carlson said that he has no knowledge of these later boats or builders.) Thanks to CARLSON 30 owner Philip Waterman for providing information on this yacht. Thanks to designer Dick Carlson and his wife Joan for providing additional information.

Sailpages Buyer's Take

The Carlson 30 is a rare, designer-built vessel created by Richard Carlson and constructed by Astilleros Gallart in Spain between 1966 and 1969. With only 10 hulls built, this limited-production boat represents a unique chapter in sailing history, distinct from mass-produced contemporaries.

Best for:
This boat suits collectors and enthusiasts seeking a rare, hand-built classic with a distinct pedigree, rather than those looking for a common, easily maintainable cruiser.
Bluewater capability:
With a displacement of 7700.0 lb and a comfort ratio of 24.93, the boat offers moderate offshore capability, though its rarity and age necessitate careful structural assessment before bluewater passage.
Comparables:
Comparable to other rare, designer-specific classics from the late 1960s such as the O'Day 30 or early Catalina models, though the Carlson 30 is distinguished by its Spanish construction and extremely low build count.
