About the CAPE 30 (HOOD)
Derived from an earlier boat called the NAUGUS 30, originally built in 1967 by Naugus Fiberglass Industries, (Marblehead, MA) (6 built). The tooling was later sold to Cape Dory Yachts and renamed CAPE 30. Thanks to NAUGUS 30 owner Ben Smith for providing extra information.
The Cape 30 (Hood) is a rare, short-production vessel designed by Ted Hood and built by Cape Dory Yachts (USA) with only 6 hulls constructed in 1972. Its extremely limited build count distinguishes it from the more common Cape Dory 30 series, making it a unique collector's item with specific structural characteristics.
- Best for:
- This boat suits experienced coastal cruisers or single-handlers seeking a lightweight, performance-oriented sloop with a high SA/D ratio of 14.79, rather than heavy bluewater displacement cruisers.
- Bluewater capability:
- With a D/L ratio of 508.68 and a capsize ratio of 1.75, the boat offers moderate offshore capability suitable for coastal passages but lacks the heavy displacement typically preferred for extreme bluewater voyaging.
- Comparables:
- Comparable to the standard Cape Dory 30 and other 1970s Ted Hood designs like the Cape 33, though the Cape 30 (Hood) is distinguished by its significantly lighter displacement of 9350.0 lb and shorter production run.
