About the CAL CRUISING 46

When sales of this first version of Cal's 46 foot cruising ketch proved disappointing, (18 built) it was decided to completely redesign the interior. For the updated model (called the CAL 2-46), the engine room was moved forward, the aft cabin even further aft. The main salon and the forward cabin were enlarged. Bill Lapworth has stated that this was a favorite of all his designs and a yacht that he actually owned. The boat went through a third iteration in the mid-'70's that included smaller cabin windows and other changes to the interior. This was the CAL 3-46 (or "Mark III's"). Designed by C. William Lapworth and built by Jensen Marine (USA) from 1967–1972, the Cal Cruising 46 is a rare vessel with only 18 hulls produced. Its substantial 30000.0 lb displacement and 40.21 comfort ratio reflect a heavy, stable cruising platform intended for serious offshore passage-making.

This boat suits experienced bluewater cruisers who prioritize seakeeping and comfort over speed, particularly those willing to manage the maintenance demands of a vintage, low-production fiberglass hull.

Bluewater capability:

With a 253.97 D/L ratio and 1.61 capsize ratio, the boat is inherently stable and safe offshore, but its 37.5 ft LWL and 13.76 SA/D ratio indicate it is a moderate performer that relies on weight rather than sail area for power.

Comparables:

Comparable to other heavy-displacement 1960s-70s American cruisers like the Tartan 42 or O'Day 42, it shares a similar focus on interior volume and offshore capability, though its rarity makes direct market comparisons difficult.
