About the CAL 9.2
Based on a Ron Holland designed IOR 1/2 ton racer, the 9.2 was built under license from Jeanneau, which sold the boat in Europe as the RUSH 31. (RUSH, RUSH GTE w/deep keel,RUSH REGATTE w/lead keel and RUSH ROYAL. (Jeanneau was owned by the same parent company at the time.) Also similar to the NICHOLSON 1/2 TON. Also CAL 9.2R version with 2 spreader rig and deeper lead keel-draft: 5.58'. Yet another version was built in Brazil. (MARINER 31?)
Designed by Ron Holland and built by Cal Boats (USA) from 1981–1984, the CAL 9.2 is a 29.96 ft masthead sloop with a displacement of 7000.0 lb. While specific hull production numbers are unverified, owner reports highlight significant structural concerns, particularly regarding deck core integrity and keel attachment.
- Best for:
- This boat suits coastal cruisers and weekend sailors who prioritize a comfortable, stable platform with a 10.33 ft beam and a comfort ratio of 18.01, provided they are prepared for ongoing maintenance of aging composite structures.
- Bluewater capability:
- With a low capsize ratio of 2.16 and a D/L ratio of 190.25, the hull form suggests offshore potential, but critical reports of deck core moisture and keel smile cracking severely limit its suitability for serious bluewater passagemaking without extensive structural repair.
- Comparables:
- Comparable to other late-70s and early-80s American production cruisers like the Cal 3-29 or O'Day 30, the CAL 9.2 shares similar displacement (7000.0 lb) and beam dimensions, offering a balance of performance and interior volume.
