About the CAL 40
The rig dimensions above are from the 1963 sail plan drawing. Current class rules (2005) allow a max of: I - 46.7' J - 15.3' P - 40.1' E - 17.55' The accolades for this particular boat are many. Certainly one of the most influential designs and successful racing boats ever. With 160 built, it was also a commercial success for Jensen Marine. Less mention is made of the man, George Griffith, who actually commissioned the design, and agreed to back the construction of the first ten boats. This added note from Robert VanderPol II: "There is a single example of a raised deck Cal 40 similar to the Cal 25 & 28. Jensen Marine was promised a number of orders. All but one backed out at the last minute and only one was built and delivered."
Designed by C. William Lapworth and built by Jensen Marine (USA) from 1963–1971, the CAL 40 is a classic heavy-displacement cruiser with 108 hulls produced. Its substantial 15000.0 lb displacement and 6000.0 lb ballast provide a stable, comfortable platform, though owners report significant structural maintenance needs typical of this era.
- Best for:
- This boat suits experienced coastal cruisers and bluewater adventurers who prioritize seakeeping and comfort over speed, and who are prepared for extensive DIY maintenance and structural repairs.
- Bluewater capability:
- With a D/L ratio of 240.01 and a Capsize ratio of 1.79, the CAL 40 is well-suited for offshore passage making, provided critical structural issues like deck core rot and rudder integrity are addressed.
- Comparables:
- Comparable to the Cal 3-36 and Cal 3-40 due to shared design lineage and heavy-displacement cruising philosophy, as well as the Tartan 38 and O'Day 38 for similar era, size, and coastal cruising roles.
