About the CAL 39 (HUNT/O'DAY)

This later Hunt designed CAL 39 is completely different from earlier Lapworth designed 39's. In 2001, George Crowell of Little Compton, Rhode Island, purchased the molds and continued building new boats on a limited basis. Shallow draft/wing keel: 5.33'.

Sailpages Buyer's Take

Designed by C. Raymond Hunt and Associates and built by Bangor Punta (USA) from 1988–1997, the CAL 39 is a robust cruising sloop with a displacement of 17500.0 lb and a comfort ratio of 27.4. While the exact hulls built count is unspecified, the fleet is characterized by a heavy, stable platform with a capsize ratio of 1.94, though owners frequently report significant structural maintenance needs.

Best for:
This boat suits coastal and offshore cruisers who prioritize stability and comfort over high-speed performance, particularly those willing to invest in proactive structural maintenance and systems upgrades.
Bluewater capability:
With a displacement of 17500.0 lb, a low capsize ratio of 1.94, and a fin keel with 7.0 ft max draft, the CAL 39 is well-suited for bluewater cruising, provided critical structural issues like deck core moisture and keel sump cracking are addressed.
Comparables:
Comparable to the Hunter 39 and O'Day 38-2 from the same era, these boats share similar beam dimensions and cruising-oriented hull forms, though the CAL 39 distinguishes itself with a heavier displacement and Hunt's specific design philosophy.
