About the BLUEWATER 476
This design was originally built by Camper & Nicholson (in-house design) and called the NICHOLSON 476. The molds were then sold to Colvic Craft where it was built as the BLUEWATER 476. (photo here is actually of the last NICHOLSON 476. ) (Thanks to Jeremy McGeary, former C&N employee, for supplying corrected information.)
The Bluewater 476 is a rare, heavy-displacement cruising yacht designed by Camper & Nicholson and built by Sherlock Marine Ltd. /Colvic Craft in 1990. With a production run of only one known hull, this vessel represents a unique, bespoke entry in the late-80s/early-90s market, characterized by its substantial 33000.0 lb displacement and 39.79 comfort ratio.
- Best for:
- This boat is best suited for experienced bluewater cruisers who prioritize seakeeping comfort and offshore safety over high-speed performance or ease of single-handed handling. Its heavy displacement and cutter rig make it ideal for long-distance passages where stability and protection are paramount.
- Bluewater capability:
- With a displacement of 33000.0 lb, a capsize ratio of 1.71, and a comfort ratio of 39.79, the Bluewater 476 exhibits excellent offshore stability and motion comfort, making it highly capable for extended bluewater passages despite its limited production history.
- Comparables:
- Comparable vessels include other Camper & Nicholson designs from the same era, such as the Hallberg-Rassy 43 or the Hallberg-Rassy 47, which share similar heavy-displacement, full-keel or fin-keel characteristics. It also aligns with the 'heavy cruiser' segment represented by the Hallberg-Rassy 42 or the earlier O'Day 42, though the Bluewater 476 offers a more specialized, low-volume build quality.
