About the BALTIC 42 DP
Prototype was 'Big Shadow', and similar to the slightly larger Peterson design #77, 'Lousiana Crude'/SERENDIPITY 43. Rig Dimensions for Tall Mast version: I: 57.50' J: 17.68' P: 51.00' E: 15.00' Keel/CB version exists.
Designed by Doug Peterson and built by Baltic Yachts (FIN) between 1981 and 1985, the Baltic 42 DP is a robust heavy-displacement cruiser with only 30 hulls produced. Its substantial 18400.0 lb displacement and 24.64 comfort ratio reflect a design prioritizing stability and seakeeping over speed.
- Best for:
- This boat suits experienced coastal cruisers and those seeking a stable, heavy-displacement platform for extended offshore passages who value comfort and protection over high-performance sailing.
- Bluewater capability:
- With a low capsize ratio of 2.02 and a high displacement-to-length ratio of 201.44, the Baltic 42 DP is well-suited for bluewater cruising, offering excellent stability and motion comfort in heavy seas.
- Comparables:
- Comparable boats include the Cal 40 and O'Day 42, as they share similar heavy-displacement characteristics, fin keel configurations, and a focus on comfortable cruising from the early 1980s.
