About the ANACAPA 42 (CHALLENGER)

Originally the ANACAPA 40 built by San Pedro Boat Works. (3 built, 1969). Redesigned by Carpentier, (mainly the deck mold making it an aft cockpit model) it was offered from the same builder, Anacapa Boat Works, as the ACAPULCO 40 of which an unknown number were built. In 1972 the molds were purchased by Challenger Yachts of California. A bowprit was added and the boat was sold as the ANACAPA 42. (12 built?) Challenger Yachts went out of business, and the molds were purchased by Acapulco Yachts. (1976?) The molds for the center cockpit version were scrapped, and the aft cockpit ACAPULCO 40 once again went into production. At least 30 were built but many were sold as kits.

Sailpages Buyer's Take

Designed by Ted Carpentier and built by Challenger Yachts (USA) in 1972, the Anacapa 42 is a heavy-displacement cutter known for its robust construction. With a displacement of 22830.0 lb and a full/long keel, this vessel prioritizes stability and seakeeping over speed, reflecting the conservative design ethos of its era.

Best for:
This boat is best suited for experienced coastal cruisers and conservative bluewater passagemakers who value safety, comfort, and heavy weather capability over high-performance sailing.
Bluewater capability:
With a D/L ratio of 259.31, a Capsize ratio of 1.84, and a full/long keel, the Anacapa 42 is highly capable offshore, offering exceptional stability and motion comfort in heavy seas.
Comparables:
Comparable boats include the Tartan 42 and the Cal 40, as they share similar heavy displacement, full keel designs, and cutter rig configurations from the early 1970s that prioritize offshore integrity.
