About the AMIGO 40
The original wooden Amigo 40 was built in 1961. It is thought production of fiberglass hulls began in the 1970's. We have been told hull #19 was built in 1979.
Designed by Carl Andersson and built by Arne Arksunds in Sweden, the Amigo 40 is a rare classic with only 48 hulls constructed in 1961. This single-year production run creates a distinct, limited fleet that appeals to owners seeking a unique, heavy-displacement Scandinavian cruiser.
- Best for:
- This boat suits experienced coastal cruisers and bluewater adventurers who prioritize seakeeping and comfort over speed, as indicated by the high comfort ratio of 31.58 and displacement of 12125.0 lb. It is ideal for owners willing to perform detailed maintenance on vintage systems, given the age of the hull and the prevalence of reported structural wear.
- Bluewater capability:
- With a capsize ratio of 1.75 and a D/L ratio of 299.26, the Amigo 40 exhibits strong inherent stability and heavy displacement characteristics that support serious offshore passage-making. The full/long keel design further enhances directional stability, making it well-suited for bluewater cruising despite its age.
- Comparables:
- Comparable boats include the Swedish-built Nauticat 41 and the Danish-built Fregat 41, which share similar full-keel designs, heavy displacement, and 1960s Scandinavian construction methods. These vessels offer similar offshore stability and interior volume but differ in specific rigging configurations and interior layouts.
