About the ALOHA 8.5
The ALOHA 8.5 is an updated version of the ALOHA 28, introduced in 1983. The main difference between the 2 boats is the installation of 5 opening port lights down each side of the vessel, and the addition of more brightwork, including a trim piece running horizontally above the port lights. Rig dimensions also varied. Thanks to 8.5 owner Sean Dubreuil for providing corrections. Photo courtesy of Adam Hunt.
Designed by Ted Brewer and Robert Walstrom, the Aloha 8.5 was built by Ouyang Boat Works in Canada between 1983 and 1988. This 28.0 ft masthead sloop offers a robust cruising platform with a displacement of 6750.0 lb and a beam of 9.42 ft, though the exact number of hulls built remains unconfirmed in available records.
- Best for:
- This boat is well-suited for coastal cruisers and those seeking a comfortable, stable day-sailing experience, given its moderate D/L ratio of 204.91 and Comfort ratio of 20.58. It appeals to owners who prioritize ease of handling and proven mechanical reliability, with Yanmar being the most common engine choice in the fleet.
- Bluewater capability:
- With a Capsize ratio of 2.0 and a fin keel, the Aloha 8.5 demonstrates reasonable offshore stability, though its relatively light displacement of 6750.0 lb suggests it is better suited for protected coastal waters and shorter offshore passages rather than extreme bluewater expeditions.
- Comparables:
- The Aloha 8.5 compares favorably to other late-1980s 28-foot cruising sloops like the Cal 2-38 or O'Day 28, sharing similar beam dimensions and displacement characteristics. Its design philosophy aligns with other Ted Brewer designs of the era that prioritize seaworthiness and interior volume over pure racing performance.
