About the ALDEN 50

Alden design #1180x. (ALDEN 50/52/54). Of this series, the ALDEN 50 was the first boat planned and the last built. Not to be confused with another ALDEN 50 built by Cheoy Lee, a much earlier design. See ALDEN 54 (1985).

Sailpages Buyer's Take

The Alden 50 is an ultra-exclusive, heavy-displacement cruising yacht designed by Alden Yachts and built by Alden Yachts Inc. (USA) between 1996 and 1998. With only 3 hulls built, this rare vessel represents the pinnacle of traditional American yacht building, featuring a 38000.0 lb displacement and a 13.5 ft beam.

Best for:
This boat is best suited for experienced bluewater cruisers who prioritize seakeeping comfort and traditional aesthetics over high-speed performance or ease of single-handed handling. Its substantial size and weight make it ideal for couples or small families seeking a stable, comfortable passage-making platform.
Bluewater capability:
With a D/L ratio of 332.75, a Capsize ratio of 1.61, and a Comfort ratio of 44.68, the Alden 50 is exceptionally well-suited for offshore passage-making, offering superior stability and motion comfort in heavy seas.
Comparables:
Comparable boats include the Swan 51 and the Hallberg-Rassy 51, as they share similar production eras, heavy displacement characteristics, and a focus on offshore cruising capability. These vessels also appeal to buyers seeking high-quality construction and proven offshore pedigrees from the late 1990s.
